Reference Photo vs Drawing

How to choose the perfect picture of your pet for a pet portrait commission:

When looking through your pictures and albums of your loved ones and pets, or taking a new picture yourself, there are a few key things to consider:

  1. Good Lighting – is your picture light enough to see your pet?

  2. True eye colour – does the picture show the true eye colour of your pet?

  3. True fur colour – does the picture show the true fur colour of your pet?

  4. Visible fur direction – can you see the fur in detail?

  5. A good distance from the camera – is your pet too far away and hard to see?

Capturing Personality - Try photographing your pet doing something they love to capture their personality. You know your pet best!

Pets That Have Passed Away - If you are looking at commissioning a portrait of a pet that has sadly passed away I understand you may have limited photos available, but please don't worry - send me as many photos as you can and we can work through them together.

Multiple Pets On One Page

If you would like a ‘family portrait’ drawn of your pets altogether but can’t get a picture of them sitting together then don’t worry! With the right selection of photos, I will be able to draw them all together for you. The example below shows how I have drawn four cats together from four separate photos. Or, you can have a more traditional style of a portrait with just head an neck poses. If you would like any of these options or need help choosing the right photo then please contact me and we can discuss the best picture selection together.

Step 5: Watching Your Portrait Come To Life

I will email you just before I start your portrait so you can watch the progress on my
Facebook Page and Instagram Page .

Step 6: Give The Final Approval

Once I have completed the portrait and you are happy with it I will mount, pack and send it to you.

Mounting/ Matting

A stunning way to finish your portrait off is to have your portrait mounted/matted with a backing board. All my picture mounts are cut to a deep 45-degree bevel cut to give your portrait more depth, are 100% acid-free, using conservation mountboard which is essential to guarantee protection and longevity of your portrait, guarding against staining. All my mounts comply to the Fine Art Trade Guild conservation standard.

All portraits are mounted with a double white mount as a standard so please let me know if you would like a specific colour and I can provide you with mock-ups to choose from.

Framing

For an extra charge, I can professionally frame your portrait so it is ready to hang on your wall as soon as you receive it. This is a popular addition to the pet portrait experience for most of my customers as it can be difficult to find the time to have the portrait framed yourself.

Anti-glare UV protective Plexiglass is used to give your portrait full protection from the elements and ensure its longevity. Please let me know if you would like a specific colour or frame style and I can provide you with mock-ups to choose from.

Step 7: Packing & Delivery

Once the portrait is packed and weighed you will then be invoiced for delivery. Delivery can take 3 to 5 working days depending on your country and will be fully tracked with UPS.

Step 8: Leave A Review

The best part of my job is hearing from you! When you have safely received your portrait, let me know what you think!
